Situated at the top of a cliff at the side of River Dordogne, just dominating the beautiful village of Beynac-et-Cazenac, this majestic castle was built in the 12th century.
It is a well preserved monument and one of the most impressive fortresses in the Perigord region. It was conquered by Richard the Lionheart, the Lords of Beynac. Many battles occurred during the period of the 100 years’ war.
Visiting the castle takes you back in time to the Middle Ages. From its dungeon, 152m high above the river, the view of the 5 castles valley is magnificent. Not far away from Beynac Castle, stands Castelnaud Castle, another historic place of fame.
